| Abstract | This document, “Assessment of the performance of severe acute malnutrition treatment of children aged 6-59 months in Amhara, Oromia, and Somali regions of Ethiopia”, was developed by the NIPN team and provides a detailed description of the dataset of assessment of the performance of severe acute malnutrition treatment of children aged 6-59 months in Amhara, Oromia, and Somali regions of Ethiopia. Malnutrition is a significant public health problem among women in Ethiopia, including the nutritionally vulnerable period of children aged 6-59 months. Globally, approximately 47 million children under 5 years of age suffer from acute malnutrition (UNICEF, WHO, & World Bank, 2020). Acute malnutrition is the underlying cause for 875,000 annual child deaths, representing around 13% of deaths in children under five years of age globally (1). In Ethiopia, 7.2% of children under five years of age (1,192,000 children) suffer from acute malnutrition (Central Statistical Agency [Ethiopia] and ICF, 2016) (2). The Sphere standards evaluate the performance of the Government of Ethiopia in managing severe acute malnutrition (SAM) programs. The widely used Sphere indicators include the cure rate, defaulter rates, and deaths. However, to adequately assess the performance of this program, additional data are needed on relapse, length of stay, average weight gain, and information on underlying characteristics that affect treatment outcomes. Between January and June 2020, 40% of SAM admissions in Ethiopia were reported from Oromia, 23 % from Somali, and 14 % from Amhara. making these regions the top three high SAM burden areas (UNICEF, 2020d) (3). For this, an assessment of the performance of severe acute malnutrition treatment of children aged 6-59 months in the Amhara, Oromia, and Somali regions of Ethiopia was conducted by the EPHI NIPN project. |

| Description | The study population were children aged 6-59 months who received treatment for SAM in the selected Health Posts located in Oromia, Amhara, and Somali regions of Ethiopia. Sample size was estimated for each of the three regions using a single population proportion formula. A two-stage sampling method was used to select the study participants. Health Posts were the primary sampling units for this study. With-in each health post, 30 children aged 6-59 months were included. Based on these a total of 2203 sample size (792 for Amhara, 932 for Oromia and 477 for Somali) was used in the study. |
