| Abstract | Preventive chemotherapy (PC) using mebendazole (MBZ) is one of the primary intervention strategies of Ministry of Health (MoH) in the control and elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. To monitor the success of the Mass Drug Administration (MDA), Coverage evaluation surveys (CES) were conducted following round 2 MDA in two Arm 3 woredas (Wondo Gent and Tula Kifle Ketema ), and the resultant survey coverage was compared to reported administrative coverage. Mebendazole drug was provided as part of MDA between September 6 to 12, 2023 and survey coverage was conducted from October 5 -10, 2023. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in two woredas (districts) of the Sidama region. All eligible individuals, school aged children (5 to 14 years both sexes), Adolescents (from 15 to 19 years both sexes), and women of the reproductive age group (20 to 49 years) from the randomly selected households were invited for an interview. The study design, sample size, analysis and report writing were conducted according to the adapted World Health Organization (WHO) CES guidelines for PC. The study interviewed a total of 707 households and 3,119 individuals across two woredas in the Sidama region. Overall, the survey coverage for Mebendazole (MBZ) across the studied woredas was 51.9% (95% CI; 50.1% – 53.6%). Reported administrative coverage for MBZ in both woredas was higher than the survey coverage, at 99% in Wondo Genet and 109% in Tula Kifle Ketema. Almost half of the individuals (47.89%) were not offered PC. The predominant reason for not achieving the WHO target coverage of 75% was beneficiaries not informed of the program (38.4%) followed by drug distributors failing to reach all households (34.9%) and beneficiary absenteeism during MDA (22.4%) |
