Abstract

Introduction : Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is defined abnormal enlargement
of prostate gland mainly transitional zone which leads to blocking of the urethra leads
to difficulty of urination or complete absence of urination, finally lead to bladder
outlet obstruction (BOO). The Global predict coverage of BPH case were 94.0 million
people. In 2019, benign prostatic hyperplasia cause for 1.86 million years lived with
disability (YLDs) globally.
Objective:To assess the prevalence of symptomatic Benign prostate hyperplasia
(BPH) and its associated factor in selected governmental General hospital in
Benishangul Gumuz region, Ethiopia in 2023.
Methodology:Retrospective institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted
among adult male patients visited surgical ward of all general hospital in Benishangul
Gumuz from March 16 to May 16. A total of 244 samples were selected from selected
general hospital by using simple random sampling. Sample population was allocated
to each hospital based on the number of male patient visited each hospital from
January 2020 to January 2023. I used a checklist to collect data by using Open data kit
software. The collected data were analyzed by using statistical product and service
solution (SPSS) version 25. I used bi-variant and multi-variant logistic regression to
see the association between independent and dependent variables. Finally, analyzed
data presented by graph, text, figure, and table.
Result:From this study the prevalence of BPH among male patients visited surgical
ward and OPD was 17.9%. and then age greater than 60,chat chewing, having history
of kidney disease, having history DM,having family history of BPH were significantly
associated variable with BPH.Acute urinary retention were the major complication of
BPH and frequency of urination was the major symptom that most of BPH patient
complain.
Conclustion.I would like to conclude that the prevalence of this studies is higher than
studies reported in Ethiopia
