Abstract

Adolescent girls and young women aged 10-24 years living in conflict or disaster-affected populations face several sexual and reproductive health problems. Existing evidence shows that forced migration and human mobility make girls and women more vulnerable to poor Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) outcomes such as high-risk sexual behaviors, lack of contraception use, STIs, and HIV/AIDS. They also experience gender-based and sexual violence and abuse. The limited access and unavailability of SRH services due to distances, costs, and stigma often expose such vulnerable adolescent girls and youth to unwanted pregnancies, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), maternal death, and sexual violence. They also experience increased exposure to early and forced marriage. This survey aims to conduct a baseline survey on adolescents and youth aged 10-24 years living in selected woredas of West Guji (i.e., Bule Hora, Kercha, and Gelana) and Gedeo Zones (i.e., Yirgachefe, Gedeb, and Dilla town) of Oromia and SNNP regions. The percentage of respondents in the age group 10-14, 15-17, and 18-24 was 33.5%, 22.3%, and 44.2%, Only about  (31.8%) of the adolescents and youth had ever been displaced. The current school attendance rate was 68.4% in West Guji and 59.5% in Gedeo. The median age at first marriage among adolescents and youth was 18 years, whilst it was 17 years for females. Regarding maternal health care service utilization, about 17% of the female respondents had ever given birth. Nearly 85% of them visited health facilities. Regarding sexual behavior, among the survey respondents, the majority of them (71%) had inadequate knowledge about the scientifically expected time of occurrence of pregnancy; whereas only 29% had adequate knowledge. Like general knowledge, a very high percentage of young people (83%) had adequate knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Only 1% of the young people reported ever-experience of STIs.Of the sexual partners, only 41% of those who have experienced STI obtained treatment. The proportion of every user of contraceptives was very small (13%). Likewise, only about 7% of the young were current users of contraceptive methods at the time of the survey. More than three-fourths (79%) of the respondents have not ever used SRH services. whereas 20% of them had limited involvement in SRH programs.
