| Abstract | Kombolcha Woreda is characterized as a chronically food insecure woreda in the zone. According to the explanation of Woreda's agriculture expert, the lowland community is more vulnerable to food insecurity than the mid-highland community. All the 9-lowland rural kebeles are targeted under PSNP (Productive Safety Net Program) whereas the mid-highlands kebeles are not included in the PSNP. Therefore, GOAL Ethiopia has conducted a full-scale nutrition survey in collaboration with woreda partners from March 11-21, 2009 to monitor the food security, health, and nutrition situation of the population, as well as, the CTC program. These findings of the survey indicate that the prevalence of global acute malnutrition of 10.8% and SAM at 1.0%. According to the National Emergency Nutrition Assessment Guideline (December 2002, DPPC), the current global acute malnutrition rate can be classified as serious, with aggravating factors. Some of the aggravating factors are a very low BCG and measles vaccination coverage, poor food security prospects, and very low availability of safe water sources associated with a high prevalence of diarrhoeal diseases. Measles and BCG vaccination coverage are very low as compared with the national reference (77.2% for BCG and 65.6% for measles with card). The finding also indicated that half of the communities in the surveyed villages use unsafe water sources such as rivers, unprotected springs, and ponds. The caring practices of mothers or caregivers in the community are very poor. As per the findings of the current survey, around 37.2% of the interviewed mothers or caregivers reported that they did not give colostrum to the newborn baby rather, 57.5% of mothers prefer to give water and sugar. |

| Description | Kombolcha is one of the woredas in the East Hararghe Zone of the Oromiya regional state. It is located in the Eastern part of the country at about 528 km from the federal capital town Addis Ababa and 17 km from the zonal town of Harar. It consists of 19 rural kebeles and one urban. Melka Rufa serves as the Woreda's administrative town. The livelihood of the vast majority of the population is mainly dependent on rain-fed agriculture. The Belg and Kiremt rains are the two rainy seasons, and both are crucial for the planting of short and long maturing varieties of crops. GOAL Ethiopia established a CTC program in the woreda starting in August 2008 to address the need for severely malnourished children through OTP and SC in order to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with acute malnutrition. The intervention was started after conducting a rapid health and nutrition assessment (from August 5-7, 2008) with results indicating serious food security, health, and nutrition situations. Currently, GOAL Ethiopia conducts a full-scale nutrition survey in collaboration with woreda partners from March 11-21, 2009 to monitor the food security, health, and nutrition situation of the population, as well as, the CTC program. |
