| Abstract | The survey has been carried out in Kerssa woreda, East Harerge zone in Oromiyia region from 23td June—29th June 2008. Therefore, the aim of this survey was to assess the overall health, child feeding, WASH, and food security situation of the woreda, assess the severity of malnutrition and mortality through quantitative data collection from randomly selected households, and make appropriate recommendations with regards to emergency interventions based on the findings. Results from this study indicated that the prevalence of global acute malnutrition among the surveyed population was found to be 12.8% (9.2–16.495% C.I.) and the prevalence of severe acute malnutrition was 2.2% (1.1–3.4 95% C.I.), including 8 cases of bilateral pitted edema. The GAM rate of 12.8% is considered serious based on DPPC guidelines, with aggravating factors. Additionally, both the crude mortality rate of 0.36/10,0000/day and the under-five mortality rate of 0.8/10,000/day are found to be well below emergency thresholds for sub-Saharan Africa (0.9 and 2.3 respectively–SPHERE standards). It is, however, slightly bizarre that the prevalence of malnutrition is high and yet the mortality rate is comparably so low. |

| Description | The setting of this study is in the Eastern parts of the country at about 475 km. from the capital Addis Ababa. The Woreda consists of 35 rural Kebeles and three town kebeles. The majority of the people are Oromo; the remaining are Amahara. Oromifa is the official language of the Woreda. The community appears to be predominantly Muslim. In the Kerssa Woreda, 92% of the households earn their livelihoods from mixed-type subsistence farming and livestock, while the remaining 8% reportedly earn their living from petty trade, government jobs, and other small-scale initiatives. The rationale for conducting the survey was based on the rapid health, nutrition, and food security assessment result that the food security situation was expected to deteriorate. Hence GOAL started intervening in the Woreda and wanted to verify the current level of malnutrition within the woreda based on the region's request. Therefore, the overall objectives of the survey will be to assess the overall health, child feeding, WASH, and food security situation of the woreda, assess the severity of malnutrition and mortality through quantitative data collection from randomly selected households, and make appropriate recommendations with regards to emergency interventions based on the findings. |
