| Abstract | Kerssa Woreda is located in the East Hararghe Zone of the Oromiya regional state. It is located in the eastern part of the country at about 475 km from the federal capital Addis Ababa. In the woreda, 92% of households earn their livelihood from mixed-type of subsistence farming and small livestock rearing, and the remaining 8% earn their livelihood from petty trade and other small-scale initiatives. The average landholding is estimated to be 0.5 hectares per household. So, the current survey is conducted as an end line to determine the current food security, health, and nutrition situation of the population, and based on the assessment results, decid whether to hand over the program to woreda MoH or not. The findings of the current survey indicate the prevalence of global acute malnutrition (<-2 z scores weight for height and/or edema) to be estimated at 6.2% and severe acute malnutrition (<-3 scores weight for height and/or edema) estimated at 0.4%. No one child was identified as having nutritional bilateral pitting edema. This level of malnutrition (6.2%) is classified as normal for the chronically malnourished population as per the national nutrition assessment guidelines (DPPC, December 2002). Furthermore, the current nutrition survey finding indicates that there is not a sign of an abnormal food security situation in the district. The onset of the current belg rains is on time and it favors the farmers settled in high land rural kebeles for timely planting of belg crops. The future food security prospect is highly dependent upon the current belg rains. Therefore, close monitoring of the situation is highly recommended. Additionally, BCG and measles vaccination coverage was estimated at 50.2% and 39.2% respectively. This vaccination coverage is encouraging, but it needs to be strengthened to improve its coverage. Finally, finding from this study also revealed that the introduction of complementary feeding at the correct time is very low, and for children who get butter, sugar mixed with water, and caw/got milk at the time of birth is high. Also, the coverage of the pit latrine and disposal pit is below expected. |
