| Abstract | This nutrition survey covered the smallest geographical unit (village) found in 45 rural kebeles in the Bulehora woreda. GOAL Ethiopia has been implementing a CMAM program in Bulehora Woreda since April 2010 in collaboration with the Woreda health office and zonal health department. The main objective of this survey is to monitor the food security, health, and nutrition situation of the population by quantifying the acute malnutrition and mortality to determine whether the ongoing nutrition intervention program is to continue or scale-up in the area. The survey was conducted between 2nd and 15th March 2013. The findings of the current survey indicated that the prevalence of global acute malnutrition was <-2 z-scores weight for height and/or edema is estimated at 2.7% (95% CI 1.5-4.9) and severe acute malnutrition, <-3 z-scores weight for height and/or edema is estimated at 0.4% (95% CI 0.1-1.6). No children were identified with nutritional bilateral edema. Therefore, according to the guidelines for emergency nutrition surveys in Ethiopia's interim new version in September 2008 and national nutrition assessment guidelines (DRMFSS, December 2002), this level of malnutrition (2.7%) could be classified as normal for a chronically malnourished population. The existing CMAM program should be handed over to the Woreda health office with remote support and close monitoring of the health and nutritional status by GOAL Ethiopia. |

| Description | Bule-Hora Woreda is one of the 14 woredas of the Borena zone of Oromiya regional state. It is in the southeast part of Ethiopia, about 467 km from Addis Ababa and 100 km from the zonal capital Yabelo. According to the Woreda agriculture and rural development office, more than two-thirds of the rural population is predominantly dependent on agro-pastoral [58.0%] while the remaining are categorized as pastoral [26.0%] and agricultural [16.0%]. The pastoral communities are engaged in seasonal movement during the dry season and/or when the normal rainy season fails. They move to a place where pasture and water are available and stay there until pasture and water are regenerated in their original place. GOAL Ethiopia has been implementing a CMAM program in Bulehora Woreda since April 2010 in collaboration with the Woreda health office and zonal health department. The main objective of this end-line nutrition survey was to monitor the food security, health, and nutrition situation of the population by quantifying the acute malnutrition and mortality to determine whether the ongoing nutrition intervention program is to continue or scale-up in the area. The survey was conducted between 2nd and 15th March 2013. |
