Abstract

This survey is an end-line survey that enables the current nutrition, health, and food security situation of the woreda population to be assessed and to see the magnitude and severity of the problem if any. The survey was conducted starting from 29th March 2012 for 15 consecutive days. The GOAL Ethiopian team utilized appropriate statistical procedures using the ENA-Delta for SMART software, the November 2011 version, to determine the sample size for both anthropometry and mortality. The team has collected relevant secondary information prior to the survey regarding the current food security and health and nutrition situation in the area. The information was obtained from the woreda Health & agriculture and rural development offices, DPP desk (EW), and administrative office.

Finding from this study indicated that the prevalence of global acute malnutrition WFH, <-2 z-scores weight for height and/or edema is estimated at 12.1% (95% CI 9.7- 15.1) and severe acute malnutrition <-3 z-scores weight for height and/or edema is estimated at 0.8% (95% CI 0.3-2.1). No child was identified with nutritional bilateral edema. According to the guidelines for emergency nutrition surveys in Ethiopia (interim new version September 2008) and national nutrition assessment guidelines (DPPC, December 2002), this level of malnutrition (12.1%) with aggravating factors [poor food security prospect, poor condition of livestock, increasing-price of crops, decreasing price of shoat and poor health situation] is classified as serious. Additionally, the woreda is characterized by recurrent moisture stress/drought that repeatedly affected crop production, impacting the food security situation in the area. Similarly, the BCG vaccination rate was estimated at 39.1% (95% CI 32.3-45.9) and measles vaccination coverage with the card was estimated at 4.7% (95% CI 2.0-7.4) which is very low, and it increased to 79.8.% (95% CI 73.0-86.6) when mothers were asked to recall whether their children are being vaccinated for measles. Also, poor sanitation, personal and environmental hygiene, and availability of pit latrines and waste disposal pits are common problems in the surveyed villages.

Description

Sekota woreda is one of the six rural woredas of the Waghemra zone of Amhara regional state. In terms of geographical area, it is larger than the other woredas and because of this Abergele woreda was recently [1999 EC] split up from it and become an independent woreda. Due to repeated climatic adversities such as erratic, late-onset and early withdrawal of both belg and kremt rains, a highly degraded land, infertility of soil due to erosion year after year, and fragmented plots of land (on average 0.75 hectare per household) which is not sufficient to accommodate the annual food needs of the households and inadequate off-farm employment opportunities Sekota has been characterized as a moisture stress woreda.

In Sekota woreda there are 33 health posts, three health centers, four upgrade health centers and 66 health extension workers available to give services to the communities. Regarding the infrastructure (road accessibility) of the woreda, seven kebeles are inaccessible and 26 kebeles are accessible.

GOAL Ethiopia has implemented a CMAM program in the Sekota woreda since March 2011 in collaboration with the woreda and zonal health department. This is the second standard nutrition survey that GOAL Ethiopia has conducted in the woreda. This survey is an end-line survey that enables the current nutrition, health, and food security situation to be assessed for the woreda population and to see the magnitude and severity of the problem, if any. The survey was conducted starting from 29th March 2012 for 15 consecutive days.
