| Abstract | According to Amhara Region Food Security and Disaster Prevention Office (ARFSDPO) /Regional Emergency Nutrition Coordination Unit (ENCU) and DRMFSS/F-ENCU, Tselemt is classified as a priority hotspot since April 2013. As per the regional health bureau, the screening result for July 2013 under the CHD program was reported at 30.7% (MUAC <12cm). Taking into account the seriousness of the situation in the Woreda a joint mission assessment team from the region was diploid to the woreda in October 2013 and came up with the following major findings: high proxy GAM indicated in the last CHD report, high case out of screened children, high pipeline and supply chain management problem, no stabilization center and standard nutritional survey is recommended to reveal all existing situation and activities for proper planning. In response to this GOAL, Ethiopia conducted a standard nutrition survey in the Telemt Woreda as a baseline to assess the current nutrition, health, and food security situation of the population starting from 3rd 24th December 2013. The aim of this study was to determine the current nutrition, health, and food security situation of the population. A total of 540 children aged 6-59 months were analyzed in the survey. The findings of the current survey indicate that Global acute malnutrition (GAM) was estimated at 12.4% [95% CI 9.6- 15.9] while severe acute malnutrition (SAM) was estimated at 1.5% [95% CI 0.7-3.1]. As per the interim guidelines for emergency nutrition surveys in Ethiopia (new version September 2008, this level of malnutrition (12.4%) could be classified as serious with the poor food security situation in some pocket areas which is unexpected during harvesting time and poor EPI coverage as aggravating factors. Besides, poor food security prospect is anticipated in the surveyed area in the months ahead. The majority of the Woreda population (82.3%) depends on unsafe sources of water for drinking and the BCG vaccination rate was estimated at 12.8% (95% CI 10.1-16.0) and measles vaccination coverage with cards was estimated at 0% which is very low, and it increased to 45.9% (95% CI 41.7-50.2) when mothers were asked to recall whether their children are being vaccinated for measles. In addition, this study revealed that poor sanitation, personal and environmental hygiene, and availability of pit latrines and waste disposal pits are common problems in the surveyed villages. |
