| Abstract | Accurate and up-to-date cold chain equipment inventories (CCEIs) are essential to effectively managing cold chain assets within a health system. Updated CCEI data enable governments to make informed decisions on vaccine distribution and storage, equipment maintenance and repair, routine and campaign immunization planning, and procurement. Therefore, maintaining the quality of vaccines is one of the main challenges of immunization programs in Ethiopia. So, this study aimed to examine the status of the Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) Cold Chain Equipment and evaluate infrastructures for immunization Census-based survey of Public Health Facilities of Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from December 15, 2019, to May 27, 2020, in all public health facilities and including Woreda Vaccine Store, Zone, and Regional EPSA Hub, and National vaccine storage EPSA Central Store in Ethiopia. Overall, 20,798 public health facilities and governmental organizations were involved in this survey. In this survey the following study variables were addressed: Region, Types of health facility, Vaccine storage, and immunization services, Static immunization delivery within the health facility, Mode of vaccine supply, and was there any vaccine stock out in the last 3 months?, Kerosene supply, Grid electricity availability for the facility, Electricity source for the facility, Solar energy availability, Solar energy functionality, Availability of functional Generator, Availability of functional incinerator, Mobile network availability and Cold Chain Equipment Maintenance tool kit availability. |

| Description | The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) with other development partners conducted a national EPI cold chain assessment, which was a census of all public health facilities (Hospitals, Health Centers, and Health Posts) and at all regional health bureaus, zonal health departments, and woreda health offices, including the current structure of managing EPI cold chain through PSA. The National Cold Chain Inventory was done with a view to quantify and characterize the condition of cold chain equipment throughout the country. In addition, it is deemed to evaluate per level all logistical aspects (storage capacity, working status, and distribution), to give inputs to identify immediate and long-term requirements to meet current and future EPI needs, especially in the context of future vaccine requirements, and to generate data for the inventory that will serve as an important information source for generating a cold chain expansion, maintenance, and a replacement plan. |
