Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Oromia region of Odaboltum woredas in west Hararghe Dale woreda by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters of household children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following. 

  1. The prevalence of acute malnutrition based on weight-for-height z-scores was 4.7 % of them classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), and 0.2 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). There was no crude mortality rate and 0.09 deaths/10,000/day under-five mortality rates.
  2. About 73.6 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 13.2 % from cough (ARI), and 3.8% from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, TB (BCG) by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months were 60.2 %, 35.2 %, and 60.9 % of the respondents respectively.

Description

This dataset on nutrition and retrospective mortality survey in Odaboltum woreda of West Hararghe zone Oromia region was conducted by Goal Ethiopia using a two-stage cluster sampling approach among 434 children and  671 households between March 5th to March 15th, 2013. The dataset captures information on the prevalence of global acute malnutrition or nutritional status by measuring MUAC, morbidity status, health-seeking condition, child vaccination, and supplementation includes vaccinated against measles, BCG (TB), Vitamin A supplementation, household characteristics including the condition of food security, accessibility to water, and community discussion which includes the level of access to health facilities, condition of the pasture, availability of water for livestock, and the condition of livestock. Generally, the objective of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months (or 65-<110cm in height). The data set also incorporated the household’s main livelihood, community discussion regarding health facility time, and water availability for livestock.
