Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Amhara region of Mekidella woreda in the South Wollo zone by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters of household children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following.

  1. The prevalence of acute malnutrition based on weight-for-height z-scores was 10.8 % of them classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), and 0.7 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 0.09 and 0.4 deaths/10,000/day respectively.
  2. About 29.3 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 20.7 % from cough (ARI), and 27.6 % from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, TB (BCG) by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months were 8.6 %, 76.1 %, and 84.7 % of the respondents respectively.
