Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Benishangul Gumz region of Assosa zone in Bambasi woreda by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters of household children aged between 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following major points.

  1. The prevalence of acute malnutrition based on weight-for-height z-scores was 6.9 % of them were classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), 6.5 % as moderate acute malnutrition, and 0.3 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 0.15 and 0.03 deaths/10,000/day, respectively.
  2. About 40.9 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 16.7 % from cough (ARI), and 24.2 % from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, TB (BCG) by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months was 17.7 %, 63.2 %, and 83.2 % of the respondents, respectively.

Description

This dataset on Standard nutrition survey in Bambasi woredas of Assosa zone of Benishangul Gumz region conducted by Goal Ethiopia using a two-stage cluster sampling approach among 530 children between December 15th to 30th, 2009. The dataset captures information on the prevalence of global acute malnutrition or nutritional status (level of wasting) by measuring MUAC and or Oedema, morbidity status, health-seeking conditions, child vaccination, and supplementation includes vaccinated against measles, BCG (TB), and Vitamin A supplementation, household characteristics including the condition of food security, accessibility to water, and community discussion which includes the level of access to health facilities, condition of the pasture, availability of water for livestock, and the condition of livestock. Generally, the objective of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months (or 65-<110cm in height). The dataset also incorporated the households' main livelihood, community discussion regarding health facility time, and water availability for livestock.
