Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Afar region of Gulina woreda by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters of household children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following issues.

  1. The prevalence of acute malnutrition based on weight-for-height z-scores was 11.1 % of them classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), and 0.9% of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 0.22 and 0.16 deaths/10,000/day, respectively.
  2. About 28.9 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 18.9 from cough, and 44.4 % from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, BCG by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months were 12.2 %, 4.5 %, and 62 % of the respondents, respectively.
  3. In regard to sources of drinking water they were using Pipe water (treated), Pipe water (untreated), borehole, unprotected spring, unprotected well surface water, and water treatment. Additionally, the majority (54.7 %)  of their infant and young children feeding practices were early Initiation of breastfeeding (within I hour).
