Abstract

This survey on KAP survey on HIV/STI and condom use among the workforces of GERD project and commercial sex workers in Bamza aimed to assess identify and assess risk behaviors of the GERD workforce and associated populations on HIV and STI transmission, and design the needs for and development of information, education, and communication. The result of this end-line survey revealed the following basic issues. 

  1. 82% of the respondents were males, the lowest age was 15 years old, and only 22.3 percent of the respondents were currently married. In regard to school attainment, elementary education attainment for male and female respondents is 25.8% and 13.8% respectively. Nearly one-third of the respondents (both female and male) are Mechanics/ Technicians. Laborers account for 17.7 percent, dozer /Loader/ Grader operators constitute about 13.1 percent of the respondents, and 6.8% percent are Professional workers.
  2. 69.8% and 78.8% of males and females respectively had sexual intercourse experience, 63.9 % of them had made sex for the first time with their lover, 10.7% of males and 4.3% of females had their first sex after drinking alcohol, and those who are sexually active in the past 12 months and 72.3% of them are separated from their partner or lover.
  3.  Knowledge of STIs among women was 81.5% and for men was 88.7%. Gonorrhea and HIV/ AIDS, Syphilis are recognized by the majority of respondents (78.4%, 75.3%, and 68.8% respectively). The result of the survey indicates that 74.1% of respondents know any signs of STIs. Out of these painful urinations cited by 75.9% of respondents, discharge from Penis/ Vagina was also mentioned by 69.6%.  The Majority (99.3) % of male and 98.5% of female respondents heard about HIV/AIDS. Unsafe sexual intercourse and blood transfusions are recognized by the majority of respondents as one the modes of HIV transmission. Respondents who did not know about how HIV/AIDS can be prevented or avoided are only 3.3%. Using condoms for every act of sexual intercourse is cited by 88.5% and 76.7% of male and female respondents respectively. Abstain from sex is cited by 83.9% of males and 73.3% of females. Stay faithful to a partner is also mentioned by 66.4% of males and 58.3% of females. 85.6% of respondents reported they are never at risk of HIV/AIDS. 13% of them said to some extent they are at risk. Only 1.4% of the respondents believe that they are at risk highly of HIV/AIDS. One-third of them said they are at risk because they are not staying faithfully to a partner. 30.8% of them said they share needles. Likewise, 26.9% of them reported always they make sexual intercourse and did not use condoms for every act of sexual intercourse as a reason.
  4. The majority 90.3% of them reported that they heard about VCT from health professionals. 58.5% of them heard from Radio/ Television. Likewise, 44.1% of them heard from Posters/ Brochures about VCT. The majority 84.9% of them reported that they heard about condoms from health professionals. 61.4% of them heard from Radio/ Television. Likewise, 43.5% of them heard from Posters/ Brochures about condoms.
  5. Consistent Condom Use (CCU) among female sex workers with paying clients are those who had sex with paying clients in the last seven days, whereas those with non-paying partners are identified if they had sex with a non-paying partner in the last thirty days. About 86.7% of female sex workers are venue based while the remaining 13.3% are home-based. About 25.5% of female sex workers in this survey do not have a formal education.
  6. There is high knowledge about STIs among both Consistent and inconsistent condom users, most of the respondents heard about STIs from Health professionals and Reproductive health peers. unsafe sexual intercourse (97.9%) and blood transfusions (81.3%) are recognized by the majority of respondents as one the modes of HIV transmission. The majority of respondents (84.7%) reported they are never at risk of HIV/AIDS.
  7. All of the sex workers have used condoms during the most recent sexual intercourse with paying clients and Consistent condom use in all the sexual intercourses in the last seven days prior to the survey is found to be 86.7% among paying clients. only 41.7% of the FSWs have used condoms in the last sex act and of them used condoms in the last sex act but not every time with their non-paying partners.
  8. The majorities (89.8%) know sensation condoms followed by Hiwot Trust (64.3%) and Members only condoms known by 14.3% of commercial sex workers.

Description

This mixed survey on the baseline KAP survey on HIV/STI and condom use among the workforces of the GERD project and commercial sex workers in Bamza town was conducted among 367 respondents and 98 commercial sex workers. This survey assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the GERDP workforce and sex workers towards safe sex practices. Besides, it was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence of consistent and correct use of condoms, assessing the health-seeking behaviors of the target population, and access to SRH services in the GERD-P. Generally, this survey aspired to identify and assess risk behaviors of the workforce working at GERD and associated populations on HIV and STI transmission and design the needs for and development of information, education, and communication, with the aim of adapting IEC/BCC interventions and supplies/materials.
