Abstract

This survey on the baseline market assessment of SRH Products in Ethiopia was done by DKT Ethiopia. The objective of this survey was to assess the knowledge, need, and availability of SRH products among key consumers and health providers. The result of this end-line survey revealed the following basic issues.

  1. About, 61.7% of them were married, the majority of them were literate, dominated by professionals having a Degree (53.4%) or a Diploma (41.5%), 70% were males, and 91.4% avail DKT brands by selling.
  2. 96.6% of the participants know that there are ways of delaying or avoiding pregnancy and 81.2% have used contraceptives at least once in their lives. The main source of information for FP mentioned by the respondents is Government health centers and hospitals. 72.8%% of the total population have reported using this source followed by health posts and health extension workers (68.3%). Respondents indicated that most know Injectable (86.8%), followed by pills (67.7%) and implants (62.4%). Respondents also testified that 51% get FP for free while 47.7% said they purchase it. The major side effect of applying FP mentioned by user respondents is intermenstrual spotting (39.5%). Ever use of oral contraceptives is 37% while LARC is 35.6%. Of those who have ever used contraceptives 57.7% and 35.6% discontinued using methods in the current times for OCPs and LARC respectively.
  3. Among a list of advertisements, a great majority of the respondents (90%) have reportedly seen the I plan TV ads. The next most popular is the choice of radio ad which is listened to by 70.4% of the respondents. The style of TV ads is also viewed by 64.9% of the respondents while its radio ad is recalled by 55.3%. IEC/ BCC materials are among the communication advertisements made by DKT/E.
  4. Knowledge of one or more products of DKT Ethiopia is found to be exceedingly high with around 98.8% of the providers expressing their acquaintance. Among products available Choice (88.3%) is the most accessible brand in the outlets. 82% of the providers can name at least three methods of family planning, their side effects, and their effective period. Those who couldn’t mention at least one side effect for each product are much higher for IUD (27.6%) and Implanon (24%).

Description

This survey on baseline market assessment of SRH Products in Ethiopia was made by DKT Ethiopia and was conducted in five of the bigger regions in Ethiopia: Somali, SNNPR, Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, and Addis Ababa city administration. A mixed study design was employed in this study among 1296 users and 337 providers of DKT brands. This survey has assessed the users, marital status, educational status and level of education, economic status, professionals, the availability of DKT brands, the price for the DKT products, knowledge on delaying or avoiding pregnancy, level of contraceptive users, source of information for FP, a known type of contraceptive, type of the facility, side effects observed by FP users were assessed.  Way of advertisement for FP, mostly used DKT products, DKT brand products, and the marketing process. Generally, this survey was aimed to assess the knowledge, need, and availability of SRH products among key consumers and health providers.
