Abstract

This survey on measuring access and performance (MAP) availability, depth of availability, and coverage of DKT/E Products in Ethiopia was done by DKT Ethiopia. This survey was aimed to measure the availability, depth of availability, and coverage of DKT/E products and promotional materials, intention to stock DKT/E products, and exposure to training in public and private pharmaceutical and clinical outlets in 1,395 outlets in Ethiopia. The result of this end line survey showed the following.

  1. 90% of pharmaceutical and clinical outlets in Ethiopia carry condoms, oral contraceptive pills (OCP), and ORS. Approximately 80% carry injectable and emergency contraceptives (EC). Only 5% of outlets carry long-term contraceptive methods. Ninety-five percent of pharmaceutical outlets in big towns carry condoms and ORS and 98% carry OCP. Eighty-one percent carry injectable contraceptives and 90% carry EC. LTCM is available in less than 3% of outlets in big towns.
  2. The presence of promotional materials for LTCM and OMHP is much less than for other materials. Ninety-three percent of outlets in Ethiopia carry three (3) or more DKT/E product categories. In market towns, 88% of pharmaceutical and 93% of clinical outlets carry three (3) or more product categories. In big towns, 97% of outlets carry three (3) or more product categories and 72% carry five (5) or more product categories.
  3. Seventy-seven percent of market towns and big town kebeles meet the coverage standard for condoms, 81% for OCP, and 77% for ORS. Roughly 45% of market towns and big town kebeles meet the quality of coverage standard for these product categories, except in the case of ORS. For ORS, only 6% of EAs achieve the quality of coverage standard. Fifty-six percent of EAs in market towns and big town kebeles achieve the coverage Standard, including 63% of market towns and 45% of big town kebeles. Roughly 15% of EAs achieve the quality of coverage standard for injectable contraceptives. Forty-six percent of EAs achieve the coverage standard for EC. Coverage for this product category is higher in EAs in big towns (65%) than in market towns (31%). Only 13% of EAs achieve the quality of coverage standard for EC.
  4. In terms of LTCM, including IUCD and implants, as well as OMHP, roughly 5% of EAs achieve the coverage standard and 1 – 2 % achieve the quality of coverage standard. Only three percent (3%) of EAs achieve the coverage standard for lubricant and no EA achieves the quality of coverage standard for this product category. Approximately 50 – 70% of outlets in Ethiopia that do not currently carry a DKT/E product category intend to do so in the future, except in the case of LTCM and OMHP. For these product categories, 15 – 25% of outlets intend to stock them in the future.
  5. Nearly 30% of outlets in market towns and 25% of outlets in big towns have been trained by DKT/E1. In market towns in East Tigray, over 50% of outlets have been trained by DKT/E, the highest rate for any sales territory. In contrast, in Somali and Beninshangul-Gumuz, 8% and 15% of outlets, respectively, have been trained by DKT/E. In a big town in Tigray, over 50% of outlets have been trained by DKT/E, the highest rate for any sales territory. In big towns in Somali, 5% of outlets have been trained by DKT/E.
