Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Oromia region of Kerssa woreda in the East Hararghe zone by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters of household children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following basic issues.

  1. The prevalence of acute malnutrition based on weight-for-height z-scores was 12.8 % of them classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), and 2.2 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 0.36 and 0.80 deaths/10,000/day, respectively.
  2. About 12.8 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 4.1 % from cough, and 0.72 % from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, BCG by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months were 10.7 %, 51.1 %, and 85.5 % of the respondents, respectively.
