Abstract

This survey is on measuring access and performance (MAP) availability, depth of availability and coverage of DKT/E Products in West Arsi, Silti, and Guraghe Zones was done by DKT Ethiopia. This survey was aimed to measure the availability, depth of availability, and coverage of DKT/E products and promotional materials, intention to stock DKT/E products, and exposure to training in public and private pharmaceutical and clinical outlets in 30 market towns of selected zones. The result of this end-line survey revealed the following issues.

  1. Seventy-eight percent of outlets carry condoms and 63% carry OCP, 62% carry injectable contraceptives, 54% carry EC, and 59% carry ORS. Twenty percent or less carry LTCM and other maternal Health Products (OMHP); the availability of LTCM is higher in clinical outlets and OMHP in pharmaceutical outlets.  Materials promoting Sensation and Choice are most common (44% and 50% of outlets, respectively, carry materials for these products), followed by promotional materials for Hiwot Trust, Style, I-plan, Confidence, and Post pill, which are found in 27 – 40% of outlets.
  2. Seventy- five percent of outlets carry three or more DKT/E product categories and 37% carry five (5) or more DKT/E product categories. Outlets in Gurage are twice as likely to carry five or more product categories.  Thirty-four percent of outlets carry at least three DKT/E products and corresponding promotional materials and 11% carry five or more DKT/E product categories / corresponding promotional materials.  Forty percent of market towns achieved the coverage standard, meaning that in 40% of market towns, at least 90% of outlets had three (3) or more product categories. Among outlets not currently stocking a DKT/E product category, 50 – 80% intend to stock DKT/E condoms, OCPs, injectable contraceptives, EC, and ORS in the future. An additional 40 – 50% intend to stock LTCM, OMHP, and lubricant.
  3. Less than 30% of outlets have been trained by DKT/E; at the same time, one of the main reasons cited by outlets for not carrying DKT/E products is a lack of skill/knowledge, suggesting training is maybe an important determinant of whether an outlet carries DKT/E products. Ninety percent of provide FP services, of which 90% provide short-term methods and 35% LTCM. Sixty percent of providing OCP and injectable contraceptives to 10 – 50 clients per month. Almost half of the clinical outlets are open seven (7) days per week. Fifty-five percent of clinical outlets have been trained on IUCD, implants or both products. Clinics have been trained in roughly equal proportions by the Government, DKT/E, IFHP, and MSIE.
