Abstract

This end-line survey data-set on behavior change impact survey of female sex workers in Ethiopia was done by DKT Ethiopia conducted in June 2015. This survey was aimed to assess the condom use behaviors of female sex workers. The result of this end-line survey revealed the following findings. 

  1.  The majority of sex workers were venue-based (62.9%), lived in urban (64.2%), live alone (47.0%), single (68.6%), had monthly income greater than 4000 birrs (56.4%), had no children (72%), 41.7%) have less than 4 clients per week. Alcohol and khat consumption is also largely experienced by most of the respondents.
  2. A larger proportion (59.6%) of the respondents reported that they know the Wise Up program. Knowledge of the services on peer education services is reported by 62.7% and Promotional material services were utilized by most responding sex workers (49.9%). Information on Wise Up is mainly disseminated by wise-up program persons (49.9%).
  3. Nearly half of the respondents read newspapers at least once a month. The proportion of respondents who listen to the radio constitutes 53.1% of all sex workers. Television is the most preferred media outlet in which most (77.1%) sex workers attended.
  4. Overall, 67.8% of respondents had read, heard, or seen advertisements or messages about DKT condom brands within the last six months. Those respondents who attend two and three types of media to get Hiwot Trust, Sensation, and members-only condom messages dominate the respondent’s use of media as replied by 24.5% and 22.9%, respectively. Consistent condom use in all the sexual intercourses in the seven days prior to the survey is found to be 93.2%. This has shown an 8.4 % increment over the baseline value of 86% consistent condom use.

Description

This end-line survey dataset on behavior change impact survey of female sex workers in Ethiopia was conducted by DKT Ethiopia among 1000 sex workers in 16 towns: Addis Ababa, Adama, Assosa, Awassa, Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, Dessie, Dukem, Gambella, Gonder, Harar, Jijiga, Mekelle, Nekemte, Shashemane, and Sodo. This cross-sectional, population-based survey of female sex workers aged 15 to 35 years old; captured standard demographic information, including media exposure, exposure to DKT/E messaging about condoms generally as well as exposure to Wise-Up program/project, condom use/intent to use, HIV testing and counseling. The study also identified behavioral determinants of condom use using logistic regression analysis. The clients were categorized as paying clients and non-paying partners. Generally, this survey was an end-line survey which is the continuation of the survey undertaken in 2012 to assess the condom use behaviors of female sex workers.
