Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Afar region of Gewane woreda in zone 3 by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters of household children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following.

  1. The prevalence of acute malnutrition based on weight-for-height z-scores; was 20.5 % of them classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), 18.1% as moderate acute malnutrition, and 2.5 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The Prevalence of acute malnutrition based on MUAC was 4.6 % had Severe wasting, and 7.4 % had Moderate wasting. The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 1.24 and 3.05 deaths/10,000/day, respectively.
  2. About 6.5 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 5.1 % from cough, and 7.5 % from (maria) fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, TB (BCG) by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months were 3.6 %, 19.1 %, and 48.9 % of the respondents, respectively.

Description

The 2007 dataset on the nutrition survey was conducted by Goal Ethiopia using a two-stage cluster sampling approach in Gewane Woreda of zone 3 of Afar region among 570 children aged 6-59 months conducted between 18th, October to 23rd October 2009. The dataset captures information on the prevalence of global acute malnutrition or nutritional status by measuring MUAC, morbidity status, health-seeking condition, child vaccination, and supplementation includes vaccinated against measles, BCG (TB), Vitamin A supplementation, household characteristics including the condition of food security, accessibility to water, and community discussion which includes the level of access to health facilities, condition of the pasture, availability of water for livestock, and the condition of livestock. Generally, the objective of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months (or 65-<110cm in height). The dataset also incorporated the household’s main livelihood, community discussion regarding health facility time, and water availability for livestock.
