Abstract

This survey was conducted in South nation nationalities and peoples representative region Boricha woreda of Sidama zone by Goal Ethiopia among in selected clusters of household children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following issues. 

  1. A total of 7.7 % of them were classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), 6.9 as moderate acute malnutrition, and 0.8 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 1.4 and 2.3 deaths per 10,000/day respectively.
  2. About 58.1% of the children suffered from diarrhea, 11.8 % from cough, and 14.0 % from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, TB (BCG) by scar, and who received vitamin A in the last 6 months were 5.8%, 55.8 %, and 39.2 of the respondents respectively.

Description

The 2012 preliminary dataset on the nutrition survey was conducted by Goal Ethiopia using a two-stage cluster sampling approach in Boricha Woreda of Sidama Zone of SNNP region among 434 children aged 6-59 months conducted between May 15 to May 2012. The data set captures information on the prevalence of global acute malnutrition or nutritional status by measuring MUAC, morbidity status, health-seeking condition, child vaccination, and supplementation includes vaccinated against measles, BCG (TB), and Vitamin A supplementation, household characteristics including the condition of food security, accessibility to water, and community discussion which includes the level of access to health facilities, condition of the pasture, availability of water for livestock, and the condition of livestock. Generally, the objective of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months (or 65-<110cm in height). The data set also incorporated the household’s main livelihood, community discussion regarding health facility time, and water availability for livestock.
