MOH has been investing in the standardization and expansion of health and health-related facilities as one of the major strategies to maintain effective primary health care coverage. It includes construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, furnishing, and equipping of health facilities and other health institutions such as administrative health units, blood banks, and others. Moreover, health infrastructure development also includes making basic amenities (such as electricity, and water…) available at health institutions.  In this section, health infrastructure-related major activities are described.

The number of healthcare facilities in Ethiopia has increased immensely. Within the last five years, the number of healthcare facilities and health posts has increased by 75% from 167 to 21,285. Between 20015/16 and 2019/20, the number of small health posts shows an increment of 53% from 11,446 to 17,550, the number of health centers increased from 3,562 to 3,735, and the number of public hospitals grew from 241 to 385. These public hospitals include primary, general and specialized hospitals. With an increase in healthcare facilities, citizens living in rather rural areas will have easier access to healthcare and assistance. Although the country is still making improvements daily, the increase in statistics regarding healthcare facilities exemplifies the overall improvement of healthcare in Ethiopia. While this has led to improvements in services at all levels, providing quality services remains a major challenge.

By the end of 2012 EFY (2019/20),17,550 HPs, 3,735 health centers, and 353 hospitals were available; and 425 health pots, 96 health centers, and 107 hospitals were under construction in Ethiopia. In addition, during HSTP-I, special purpose facilities, including warehouses, trauma centers, mini blood banks, and laboratory infrastructures were constructed. Currently, there are 131 hospitals with 7845 beds, 3231 clinics, and 723 health stations in the country. Half of the hospitals and two-thirds of existing clinics are run by entities other than the Ministry of Health.

Data from Ethiopian health and health-related indicators showed that the number of hospitals increased from health facilities increased in the last 2 decades. The density of hospitals to population was 7.7 per million people in 2000 and 2.8 per million in 2020. The density of the Health centers was 1.78 per million in 2000 and 0.27 per million people, 0.72 per million in 2000, and 0.057 per million in 2020.
