Abstract

This survey was conducted in the Oromia region Darolebu woreda of West Hararghe zone by Goal Ethiopia among selected clusters among households and children aged 6 and 59 months. The objective of this survey was to estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, examine the current health status of the survey population by considering mortality and morbidity rates and child vitamin A supplementation and vaccination status, and assess the food security situation among children aged 6 to 59 months. The findings of this survey revealed the following basic findings.

  1. A total of 11.0 % of them were classified as global acute malnutrition (GAM), 4.6 as moderate acute malnutrition, 2.1 % of children were severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The crude mortality rate and under-five mortality rates were estimated at 0.08 and 0.77 deaths per 10,000/day respectively.
  2. About 16.4 % of the children suffered from diarrhea, 16.1 % from cough, and 19.6 % from fever. The percentage of children vaccinated against measles by card, TB (BCG) by scar, and received vitamin A in last 6 months were 12.4 %, 62.8 %, and 93.9 % of the respondents respectively.
