Abstract

The anthropometry and retrospective mortality survey was implemented in the Dire-Dawa City administration in Ethiopia. The Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions (SMART) methodology was employed to determine the sample size in the implementation of the anthropometric and mortality survey. The main objective of this survey is therefore to assess the overall food security and nutrition situation of the population so that proper intervention could be implemented based on the findings. The survey was conducted between, May 1-12/2011. A two-stage cluster sampling method was used to collect data for the anthropometric and retrospective mortality surveys. The findings of the current survey indicated that the prevalence of global acute malnutrition, <-2 scores weight for height and/or oedema is estimated at 8.6% (95% CI 6.7-11.1) and severe acute malnutrition <-3 z-scores weight for height and/or oedema is estimated at 0.4% (95% CI 0.1-1.5).
