Abstract

Malaria is endemic in Ethiopia, with differing intensities of transmission. The disease is prevalent in areas below 2000 meters altitude covering three-quarters of the country’s landmass, with an estimated population of 56.6 million. The objective of this study was to measure the post universal campaign LLIN ownership and utilization across the different regions. To do that, 5660 households were selected from 283 enumeration areas(EAs) for the 2017 Malaria indicator survey study. The assessment of LLIN domain was a population subgroup for which separate survey estimates were desired. All enumeration areas (EAs) were within a mean altitude of below 2000 meters based on an accurate complete digital database for EAs (maps with accurate altitude). Explicit stratification was made by altitude- malaria-endemic areas (EAs with altitude =2,000m above sea level). A total of 5527 sampled households participated in the study and the response rate was 96.3%.

The result of this survey indicates that 3,746,752 (64.8%) of the households were owned at least one long-lasting insecticide-treated nets in Ethiopia.  Similarly, the result of EMIS 2017 revealed that the proportion of households with at least one LLIN for two people was found to be 39.1%.  Whereas in the 2015 MIS only 40% of the population slept under an LLIN the night before the survey.  The proportion of sampled under five years of children and sampled pregnant women that sleep under LLINs in the previous night proceeding to the questionnaire filled were 51.4% and 59.1% respectively.  The country distributes 5,913,981 numbers of LLINs although their brand was different.

Description

This dataset is generated by the Malaria Indicator Survey conducted in Ethiopia with the aim of measuring the post universal campaign LLIN ownership and utilization across the different regions. This dataset consists of information on Indicators that were measured by this assessment survey such as LLIN ownership, utilization, and retention of LLINs and Social Behavior Change Communication(SBCC). In that regard, a questionnaire adapted from the PMI Monitoring LLIN Durability Study standardized questionnaire (PMI, 2015) was used to collect data from the household heads about net ownership, utilization, and retention. The dataset is used to obtain national and regional level LLINs estimates to evaluate malaria control prevention implement in Ethiopia.
