Abstract

This facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted by reviewing medical among 443 under-five children (0-59months age) with a primary diagnosis of pneumonia or severe pneumonia in 14 hospitals located in five regions of Ethiopia, such as  Addis Ababa City Administration, Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR) and Tigray between February 1, 2016, and April 30, 2017.

The finding of this study showed the following.

Overall, only 44 (10.2%) of the children had documented oxygen saturation measurements using pulse oximetry at diagnosis. While no child who was seen at a primary hospital had the assessment at diagnosis, 14.8% and 12.6% of children who were seen at general and referral hospitals respectively had oxygen saturation measurements at diagnosis (p<0.001). More children (19.2%) with severe pneumonia had pulse oximetry at diagnosis compared to those with pneumonia (2.9%). Post-diagnosis pulse oximetry for monitoring purposes was done in 43.9% of children admitted to pediatric wards.

Description

The dataset on the use of Pulse Oximetry for Diagnosis of Hypoxemia and Monitoring of Children with Pneumonia in Ethiopia has been conducted in 14 hospitals located in five regions of Ethiopia- Addis Ababa City Administration, Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) and Tigray. This was conducted in medical records of 443 under-five children (0-59months age) with a primary diagnosis of pneumonia or severe pneumonia and seen at the hospital between February 1, 2016, and April 30, 2017, were reviewed. A structured checklist was employed to gather data on the use of pulse oximetry for the diagnosis of hypoxemia and patient monitoring and other relevant data. The data-collection tool and procedures were pretested. The Data were encoded into a computer, edited, cleaned, coded, and analyzed using Epi info version 7 and SPSS version 2.3. Variables with a p-value of < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. The dataset captures information on the unit of diagnosis, the site of management, discharge status, age of the child, age of the child, sex of the child, the weight of the child,  child’s length or height, body temperature at admission in Celsius, respiratory rate at admitting ion, nutritional status, sign and symptoms, oxygen saturation,  oxygen prescription, prescribed oxygen flow rate, monitoring frequency, oxygen saturation (SpO2) reading, duration of the patient received oxygen and any antibiotics prescribed was assessed. Generally, this survey provides information on the use of pulse oximetry for the diagnosis of hypoxemia and the monitoring of children with pneumonia in Ethiopia.
