Abstract

This survey was conducted in 197 urban kebeles/towns, and a total of 3284 DKT condom outlets were selected from nine regions and two city administrations of Ethiopia from March 30 to June 15/ 2012. The objective of this survey was to measure the coverage and quality of the condom social marketing delivery system in urban areas in nine Federal Regional states and the two city administrations -Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. The data entry clerks were recruited and trained to enter the data. The entire process of the data entry was supervised. Then, the data cleaning and analysis was conducted by SPSS, and the finding of this survey showed the following.

  1. The estimated coverage was found to be 55 %, to cultural factors, and it varies in different regions. Lack of timely resupply, prevalence-free distribution of other brands of condoms, and low awareness among communities were the major reasons frequently mentioned as factors for under coverage of DKT condoms. Communities in areas inhabited by Muslims in general and the Somali region, in particular, do have a complete rejection of condom use as well as its distribution through non-traditional outlets. Besides, sexually active individuals living in such areas have difficulties getting the products.
  2. The coverage of the quality of Sensation condoms in non-traditional outlets in urban Ethiopia is 63 %, likewise to the coverage, the quality also varies in different regions.
  3. Of the total outlets assessed during the survey Sensation condom and Hiwot Trust condom were available at 81% and 39% respectively. Members Only condom was very rare at the visited outlets, and it was found only in less than one percent of the surveyed outlets. Hiwot Trust condoms are the most available in local liquor houses (68%) and other outlets such as Khat shops and street vendors (54%). Sensation condom, on its part, was the most available at supermarkets (88%), motels (86%), and bars (83%).
  4. The prevalence of stock out of condoms was the other indicator of the quality of coverage of condoms. Shortage in the availability of DKT condoms was reported by the regions that are far from the central part of the country. In that regard,  a higher volume of stock of DKT condoms was reported by supermarkets, motels /guest houses, and hotels. On the other hand, the quality of condom storage revealed that DKT condom outlets in most of the regions have appropriate storage with the exception of outlets in the Somali region where the quality of storage was very low. Poor quality storage of condoms was found at local liquor houses and street vendors.
