Abstract

A facility-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in 10 universities selected from 36 governmental universities.  The participants chosen for the study were 973 male and female regular students from January 1 to January 30, 2019. The main objective of the survey was to generate reliable and regular information on the sexual behavior of students, usage of condoms, and contraceptives along with TemariNet.com. In that regard, a structured quantitative questionnaire was prepared in English and translated into Amharic. Resource-wise, trained data collectors were assigned to collect the data. And all in all, the data entry program was developed using the CSPro software, and data cleaning and analysis were employed by SPSS.

The results of the assessment showed that:

1. The majority (66.6%) of students have never been engaged in any kind of sexual activity. Only 28% had sex in the 12 months preceding the survey, and the percentage of sexually active students is considerably lower by 5% than baseline. Similarly, those students who had sex during the last 12 months have shown a decrement by 4% from the baseline (2015). However, 36.8% of sexually active students had 2 and more sexual partners, and this may expose the students to HIV/ STI.

2. Among sexually active students, 54.5% had used condoms during their last sex act. However, only 20.2% used condoms consistently over the 12 months preceding the survey. This is a decrease from baseline when 25% of sexually active students used condoms consistently in the 12 months preceding the survey. On the other hand, students who had exposure to at least one Temarinet intervention were more likely to use condoms consistently. Percentage-wise near to one-fourth (23.8%) of sexually active students who had exposure to Temarinet used condoms consistently, but it had decreased by 12% from the baseline. On the other hand,  students' knowledge of DKT Ethiopia’s brands such as Sensation and Hiwot Trust was at 83.7%, and 68.9% respectively. This compares favorably with baseline when 79% of students knew of DKT’s condom brands.

3. A similar exposure through media has slightly decreased from 60% of baseline results to 58.5% in the output tracking measures. The frequency of using media had highly increased from the baseline survey, particularly for out-of-home media, mini media, and interpersonal communications. Apparently, 11.5 % of the students have Temarinet accounts as compared to 30% at baseline. The reason behind this low finding needs to be identified. Constructs related to motivation (belief, attitude, and personal threat) and self-efficacy increased from baseline. Conversely,  those related to opportunity (availability, brand appeal, social norms, knowledge, and social support) have decreased. With that regard, behavioral constructs such as a test of HIV/ STI, knowledge of condom/ HIV&STI, self-efficacy, and attitude were found to have a strong association with consistent behavior of condom use. In general, the output tracking survey has revealed that Temarinet has had a considerable effect on the behavior of the sexually active university students of Ethiopia.

Description

The OTS was an institution-based survey conducted in 10 governmental universities in Ethiopia. The survey has included  973 male and female regular students. This data set captures reliable information regarding the sexual behavior of students and the usage of condoms. For the survey, only regular students were selected; first, the universities were selected with a random sampling method out of 36, and to select the regular students the multistage sampling method was employed in DKT/E’s HEI Initiative. The study considered male and female regular students from public universities of Adama, Ambo, Arsi, Jimma, Wollega, Wollo, Debre Birhan, Dilla, Hawassa, and Arba Minch Universities. In that regard, a structured quantitative questionnaire was prepared in English and later translated into Amharic. The questionnaire's main content was about the biographical characteristics, usage of alcohol, the habit of chewing chat, media habits (including newspaper,  radio, internet usage,  watching TV,  cinema theatre), sexual behavior ( the time of starting sexual intercourse, age of first sex, pregnancy history, was the pregnancy intended & its outcome, history of STI & time of last sex and with whom it was, number of sexual partners do you have in the last 12 months). The questionnaire has included issues such as condom use/intentions and exposure to condom messages (  the opportunity, ability, motivation, barriers to condom use, and exposure to condom messages ), knowledge and use of contraceptives, and Temarinet use. Apparently, trained data collectors collected the data, and a data entry program was developed using the CSPro software, data cleaning and analysis were employed by SPSS. Broadly speaking, an institution-based survey was conducted to assess the sexual behavior of students, condoms, and contraceptive use along with Temarinet.com.
