Abstract

Surveillance was employed among 28,883 outlets from all of the regional states and two city administrators of Ethiopia from April 1 to June 15 in 2015. The objective of the surveillance was to measure the coverage and quality of the DKT brand condoms' social marketing delivery system in urban areas. The data were collected using a pretested questionnaire and entered by using CSPro. With that regard, the analysis undertaken with SPSS shows:

  1. The penetration of the condom market in non-pharmaceutical outlets in 2015 was found to be 23%, of which DKT’s brand condom accounted for 17.3%. Protector Plus, lubricated and Korean from non-DKT condoms accounted for 57%, 17.3%, and 10.6 % of stock respectively.
  2. The overall weighted average coverage of any condom in non-traditional outlets in urban Ethiopia was 39.4% in 2015. There was also greater variability of coverage across the sales territories and regional states. Similar to the overall coverage for all kinds of condoms, significant variations were also observed across regions and sales territories in regards to coverage of DKT condoms.
  3. Regarding the quality of coverage for DKT Brand Condom, 23.6% of the outlets have available promotional material for DKT brand condoms and 20% of the outlets displayed promotional materials in a visible place.
  4. Of all of the outlets with any condom, 54%, 37%, and 2.1% of them had Sensation, Hiwot Trust condoms, and Members-Only Condom respectively, available at the time of the interview. The prevalence of these types of products also varied in different regional states of Ethiopia. Over 15% of the outlets that stocked any condom stated that they experienced a shortage of condoms during the past month.
  5. Close to 92% of the outlets that stocked DKT condoms made Sensation condoms their first choice, and nearly half of the non-stockers (48%) reported that their reason for not selling condoms at their establishment was the absence of customers in their area. Religion was also cited as a reason for not selling condoms by over 21% of the outlets that did not stock any condoms, and there was a low willingness to stock DKT condoms among Muslim-dominated areas.
