Abstract

The anthropometry and retrospective mortality survey was implemented in Daru Lebu Woreda in the Oromia region. To do that, the Standardized monitoring and assessment of relief and transitions (SMART) methodology were employed to determine the sample size in the implementation of anthropometric and mortality surveys. A total of 3098 children aged 6-59 months were measured. The main objective of this survey is therefore to assess the overall food security and nutrition situation of the population so that proper intervention could be implemented based on the findings. The survey was conducted between March 28 to April 11, 2013. Hence, a two-stage cluster sampling method was used to collect data for the anthropometric and retrospective mortality surveys.  Besides, global acute malnutrition (GAM) was estimated at 13.4% [95% CI 10.6-16.8] while severe acute malnutrition (SAM) was estimated to be at 0.9% [95% CI 0.3-2.3]. This level of malnutrition (13.4%) with aggravating factors  [poor food security prospect, poor condition of livestock, increasing-price of crops, decreasing price of shoat and poor health situation especially caring practice and sanitation] is classified as serious as per the guidelines for emergency nutrition surveys in Ethiopia.
