| Abstract | This baseline survey was intended to collect information that helps in designing and implementing strategies aimed at preventing unsafe abortion and providing quality abortion services where the law permits it, and post-abortion care in Ethiopia. The method for the study was mainly based on the assessment of women and institutions involved with abortion and post-abortion care. A facility-based cross-sectional study involving both quantitative and qualitative methods was conducted. In addition, a thorough review of secondary data was carried out to identify the policy, law, and other important aspects related to abortion in the country. These methods were used complementary to the aim of triangulating the results of the baseline study. This study included 880 women seeking post-abortion care service who were contacted for the survey from the study areas; Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Harar, Adama, Hawassa, Shashemene, Bale Robe, Jimma, Dessie, and Mekele. Results were put into five categories pertaining to the study, mainly revealed that the use of unsafe abortion in traditional facilities has become minimal or almost non-existent in the current times. Rather unsafe abortion was mainly seen in women who took medication abortion by themselves without the assistance of pharmacists or health professionals. Only 8.8% of the women studied were considered as having an unsafe abortion by either doing the procedure outside of health facilities or by unqualified personnel. Three types of institutions were found to be availing post-abortion facilities in Ethiopia: NGO, government, and private. A greater proportion of women went to NGO-based facilities, while government facilities were also key service givers. Private facilities gave service to the lesser proportion of women with distinctive characteristics of having a better social status and income. Facilities were further classified into MCH centers, OBS/GYN centers, higher clinics, and health centers that were giving post-abortion services in Ethiopia were included for the study. Post-abortion service giving facilities were residents of the same town they were working. Those respondents having professional work and students were overarching groups of occupational background. However, women having an income source were the major categories regarding revenue. The utmost level of income made by the respondents was 5000 birr and most respondents earn more than half of it. Post-abortion service giving facilities were found to give abortion services and were present with some limitations in their institutional setup and human resources. Lack of enough professionals, shortage of important material inputs, negative attitude and value of workers on abortion, lack of updated manuals, and lack of uniform training guides were identified. |
