| Abstract | This report presents the main findings of the baseline study on the MNCH project in six districts of the South Omo zone, conducted in July 2012. The overall objectives of the survey were to know the actual coverage of MNCH services using core indicators, determine the KAP of the community on MNCH services, and assess the capacities of health facilities to provide MNCH services in terms of basic infrastructures and program-specific training. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques were employed. Quantitative measures were obtained using structured questionnaires while qualitative information was collected by means of key informant/in-depth interviews and observations. Data from secondary sources (such as health facilities, zonal & district health offices, and AMREF offices related to the MNCH project) was also gathered and analyzed carefully. All participants of the baseline survey were women of childbearing age (15-49 years) as per the term of reference (TOR). This baseline survey showed that the respondents in North Ari (100%), Selamago (85.7%), Malle (80%), B/Tsemay (73.3%), and Jinka town (60%) and South Ari (58.3%) were illiterate. In addition, the respondents in North Ari (100%), B/Tsemay (93.3%), Malle (93.3%), South ARI (93.1%) Selamago (42%) were found to live in rural areas with highly sparse settlements. Hence, education and residence are the two most important determinants to health service access, utilization, and care-seeking behaviors among childbearing age women and children. |
