Abstract

The nutritional anthropometric and mortality survey was conducted in Bultum woreda in West Harerge Zone, Oromia Region. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling method. Along with that, Probability Proportionate to Population Size (PPS) was used in the identification of clusters within the study area. The survey team used the same village-level population data that was collected in April 2010 for the baseline survey. Moreover, cluster selection was carried out in the office during the planning, and it was attached to the survey proposal and submitted to ENCU before the team deployed to the woreda. Besides, a total of 640 households were visited and 3067 individuals were included in the entire survey. According to the findings of the survey results, the current global acute malnutrition rate [GAM] is estimated at 4.8%. The coverage of OTP sites reached 100% and all health facilities are serving as OTP sites. On top of that, the capacity of woreda health professionals to run the program is efficient, and there is a promising future food prospect in the area.

Description

In the survey children aged 6 to 59 months had their MUAC [to the nearest 1 mm], weight [to the nearest 100 gm], and length/height measured [to the nearest 0.1 cm] and checked for nutritional bilateral Oedema. Only children between the height of 65.0 and 110.0 cm (proxies for 6 and 59 months respectively) were included. Where a child’s age was unknown, it was estimated using a seasonal and local events calendar. Children <85.0 cm were measured lying down and children with a height >= 85.0 measured in a standing position. Qualitative information was collected by household and community questionnaires at the village level. In addition, secondary information from woreda health, agriculture, and early warning and water offices was collected to supplement the anthropometric data.
