Abstract

The study conducted as a primary objective to Assess the HIV prevalence and risk factors of urban and rural army recruits in Ethiopia The estimate of over 3 million HIV infected people in Ethiopia derives from scarce data, especially from rural areas, where the majority (>85%) of the population lives. The study assessed HIV prevalence in almost 72,000 army recruits who resided in urban and rural areas prior to recruitment.  Healthy recruits were transported to three army training centers. There, socio-demographic information was obtained including age, educational level, location, marital status, occupation, and religion. In 1999, data had been collected from approximately 10,000 recruits of urban residents. Socio-demographic information of these recruits was limited to age, educational level, location (region only), and ethnic group. Rapid HIV tests, HIVSPOT and Determine, were conducted on blood samples from almost 10.000 urban recruits, in 1999, and 62.000 rural recruits, in 2000, at army enrolment. The association of individual socio-demographic (risk-) factors and HIV prevalence were explored using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. In multivariate analysis risk factors with p<, 0.05 in univariate analyses were included. In urban recruits, overall HIV prevalence was 7.2%, ranging from 4.3% - 10.5% by region. In rural recruits, the overall HIV prevalence was 3.8%, but the majority, farmers (57%) and students (18%), had an HIV prevalence of 2.7% and 2.6%, respectively. Rural recruits of the Orthodox Christian religion were more likely to be HIV infected than recruits of the Muslim religion.
