Abstract

Research shows that HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malarial are among the cause of death in Ethiopia. The aim of the study was to assess the trends in hospital admissions, outpatient consultations, and mortalities related to HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malaria at selected hospitals, Health and Demographic Surveillance Sites (HDSS); and Addis Ababa Mortality Surveillance Program (AAMSP) in Ethiopia. The data were collected by trained health professionals from 31 selected hospitals using standardized data collection tools (checklists) to collect information on individual patients from hospital registers. Verbal Autopsy (VA) data also collected by trained VA interviewer from health and demographic surveillance sites to assess the cause of death. The statistical analysis of data was performed using STATA version 14 and SPSS 20.  The study finding showed that: 1) The highest proportion of death due to malaria was documented during 2002/03 (14% of malaria admission). 2)  The proportion of Malaria as a primary diagnosis was higher as compared to HIV and TB from the year 2007/8 onwards. 3) The proportion of hospital consultations with a primary diagnosis of tuberculosis showed a declining trend from 5.5 % in 2003 to 1.2% in 2014. 4) The annual number of new HIV patients enrolled in HIV care and treatment in the selected hospitals increased from 71 at the beginning of 2001/2 to 20,598 in 2006/7 then decreased constantly until 2015/16. Across the years, more women than men were registered with HIV.

Description

This dataset is produced by the HIV, TB, and Malarial Mortality Analysis Study conducted in all regional states and two city administrations of Ethiopia in 2016. The dataset consists of seven hospital information on the number of outpatient consultations (N) and the number of patients primarily diagnosed with HIV, TB, and Malarial from 2001/2 to 2015/16. This dataset is used to analyze the percentage distribution of HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malaria as primary diagnoses from a total number of outpatient consultations from 2001/2 to 2015/16 in Ethiopia. Aggregated annual data was collected by trained health professional teams using a standardized checklist from all wards and other departments of the hospitals.
