Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in Ethiopia. A nationwide, cluster-sampled, stratified (urban/rural/pastoralist), cross-sectional survey was conducted among 85 selected clusters. The main objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of pulmonary TB among the general adult population aged more than 14 years in 2010–2011. All consenting participants were screened for TB using: 1) chest X-ray (CXR) and 2) an interview to screen for symptoms suggestive of TB disease. The key findings of the survey were:1) A three times lowered the prevalence of smear-positive TB in 2010/11 compared with the prevalence from indirect estimation (284/100,000, in 2008), 2) Routine data from surveillance of smear-positive TB are consistent with data obtained from the TB prevalence survey, 3) 55% of TB cases in this survey are younger than 35 years of age 4) 90% are newly diagnosed cases, and 5) 43% of survey TB cases were identified by smear microscopy, the remaining 57% were smeared negative and culture positive. In Conclusion, the study finding showed that the TB burden was lower than previously thought, which may indicate better program performance. However, a high proportion of TB among young people suggests that TB is circulating in the community and that there is a need for more efforts to limit the spread of TB disease.

Description

This dataset is produced by a nationwide, cross-sectional, stratified, multi-stage clustered sample survey conducted between October 2010 and June 2011 to estimate TB prevalence in Ethiopia. The dataset captures socio-demographic characteristics of study participants such as sex, age, residence, occupation, and information on the presence of TB suggestive symptoms (cough, fever, night sweats, bodyweight loss, past or present anti-TB treatment, and Ant-treatment place) collected by interview. The dataset also consists of smear and culture TB case examination results of eligible participants which were identified by Chest-X-ray and laboratory test. Generally, this population-based survey data is used to estimate TB prevalence in Ethiopia at a disaggregated level by sex, geographic area for adult peoples.
